Foods Seniors Should’nt Eat

Seniors are at risk of having foodborne illnesses. There are certain foods seniors should’nt eat to prevent illness. The immune system and other organs are not as quick to recognize harmful bacteria that can cause infection. As we age, stomach acid decreases. Stomach acid is fundamental to reducing bacteria in our intestines. To help seniors reduce the risk of illness, avoid the following foods.

  1. Raw Sprouts such as alfalfa, clover and radishes are listed as foods that seniors should not eat.

These foods carry Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria, which thrive in the environment needed to grow these types of food. If sprouts are a must have, you can kill bacteria by thoroughly cooking them.  Since 1995, there have been numerous cases of sproutbreaks.

  2. Grapefruit is also a food that seniors should not eat.

Although grapefruit has many health benefits, the juice may directly or indirectly interact with certain medications. Grapefruit juice can block special enzymes that break down medication. This in turn can cause the medication to become toxic. The range of medicine effected is wide – from antibiotics to cholesterol medication. Consult your doctor before consuming grapefruit.

  3. Diet Soda drinkers are more likely to have a stroke or heart attack.

Although drinking diet may cut back on calories, they are not the best option for your health.

  4. Deli-type salads, especially mayonnaise based salads, are normally prepared without preservatives and can become contaminated

with pathogenic microorganisms. These microorganisms cause food poisoning. Storing these salads at the proper temperature can eliminate this hazard.

Unpasteurized cheese such as brie, feta, camembert can breed dangerous bacteria. These cheeses are sometimes made with unpasteurized milk and 50-160 times more likely to cause Listeria infection.

  5. Hot Dogs and luncheon meats are another food that seniors should not eat.

Though these foods are fully cooked from the grocery, seniors should reheat all ready-to-eat meals. These meats carry Listeria which grows slowly at refrigerator temperatures. Listeria causes nausea, headaches and cramping.

The government estimates there are approximately 48 million cases of food poisoning each year, which results in roughly 3000 deaths. Be careful when choosing “good” foods for your loved ones. There are just some foods that seniors should not eat!
